Relocation Tip – August 2023 – Check Whether Your Company Will Help With Expenses

Are you relocating to metro Atlanta because your company requires you to move? Before you start creating your moving budget, it is a good idea to see if your company will provide help. Companies can help you with moving expenses, but they aren’t required to do so. But instead of assuming they will or won’t, it is a good idea to find out for sure.

A great place to start is with your human resources department. They should be able to provide you with information on their relocation policy. Keep in mind that the more valuable you are to your company, the more they are likely willing to help you with your relocation. So regardless of what the policy states, speak up. Don’t just accept the expenses of the move alone. There could be some things that the company is willing to compromise with you on to make your move smoother.

What a Relocation Package Covers

If you’re with a company that definitely helps with relocation expenses, here are a few items you can expect they will help with when you’re moving.

  • Transportation
  • Help with purchasing a place to stay
  • Storage expenses
  • Additional travel expenses incurred

Keep in mind that not all of these items will be covered. But it is a good idea to ask your company what they can cover.

Who Qualifies For Assistance

In the past, relocation assistance was limited to top-level executives. In some companies, this is still the case. However, when you are required to relocate for a company, and you aren’t a top-level executive, you may be able to negotiate moving expenses. Before accepting the promotion, try to gather all the info you can about the cost of the move and see if you can negotiate this as a part of your relocation requirement.

The costs for a renter and a homeowner may be different. So make sure you emphasize which one you are when negotiating. A renter may be able to get upwards of $25,000 to help with moving expenses, while a homeowner may be able to get nearly $100,000 to help with moving expenses.

Some companies may also help by reimbursement. This means that you foot the costs of the move but retain all receipts, and they will reimburse you for costs that they deem worthy of reimbursement. If this is the case, make sure you know the rules, and don’t assume your company will reimburse everything.
